We’re chuffed to announce another collaboration with Hypnos Theatre in Malmö to bring you more live music in 2025.
Liam Grant is doing his first show in Malmö, presented by Record Turnover and Hypnos. Along with a screening of cult 1975 movie ‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’, Grant will perform his restless guitar explorations, modal epics, and driving uptempo rags. Based in New England, he’s guitarist with a punk ethos, cut from the American Primitive cloth and evoking the landscape where he was raised.
Liam Grant recently released his second widely-available LP via VHF (self-proclaimed ‘greatest record label in the world’). Prodigal Son is a portrait of an artist on the road, changing fast, recording things as they spring from the fountain. The sound here is raw – grass and dirt instead of prefab; homemade/handmade instead of high-tech.
And there’s a screening of Picnic At Hanging Rock (1975).

Nature plays a central role also in Picnic At Hanging Rock, which is based on the 1967 novel by Australian author Joan Lindsay. The story takes place in the rocky wilderness of Victoria and is an early example of a mockumentary, claiming to depict the events of Valentine’s Day 1900. Its gothic visuals are paired with a spiritualism of nature, and it has also been seen as a feminist critique. Especially the way that the female body and the oppression of its ‘wild’, untethered desires is depicted.
The film was directed by Peter Weir who later went on to make Dead Poets Society and The Truman Show. A mini-series based on the same book was shot much later, also in Australia in 2018. In 2025 a new, restored 4K version of the original premiered in theatres (this is the version that will be screened). The danger and mystery that nature is imbued with here relates it to the great American outdoors that Liam Grant interprets in his instrumental compositions.

Come to the early screening and stay for the concert, or start off with Grant’s live performance and see the film afterwards.
