Tarta Relena left a deep impression on me when they played in a big church at Le Guess Who? a few years ago. Their unique take on medieval folk music and choral mixed with contemporary experimental music has taken them to Inkonst in Sweden before, and now they are coming back to play Intonal, the celebrated Malmö-based festival taking place April 23-27 this year.
They do so off the back of their new album És pregunta that came out in October via Latency. This follow-up to their influential 2021 debut LP Fiat lux has had fans of the Barcelona duo on their toes. With these 11 tracks they continue their habit of singing in classical Greek, Italian, Spanish, Latin and Catalan – over minimal beats and pads that take their compositions into unexpected sonic territories.
The vinyl has been delayed but should hopefully be available by the time of the festival. This year they are supported by Shape+ which is a surprise because they already seem like superstars to me. But anything that has helped them arrive back in Sweden is very much welcome.
