Cheap Imitation is a Swedish duo consisting of Ann-Charlotte Rugfelt and Anders Olofson from the rich music scene of Gothenburg. Possibly taking their name from a John Cage record, they make experimental pop using drum machines samplers, synths as well as acoustic instruments. Their first album came out way back in 2016 on their own label but these days they would fit right in with Knekelhuis or other such labels.
A selftitled tape followed on Zeon Light, and they’ve continued to make music together although they fell silent around 2021. Having been compared to groups like Throbbing Gristle, it’s easy to see why people got excited about their return in February 2025. Their new album Story of Love came out on Vips & Vaps and these 10 tracks are truly hypnotic. Incredibly, it’s their first vinyl album release.
