By Coastal Café is a legendary Swedish lofi duo. I remember a time when I was interviewing a music journalist from Stockholm about the lofi aesthetic – a writer for Sonic. Apparently they featured the group in the first ever issue in 2000 (see image above). And today I just happened to find this tape on Zeon Light that is still available. Or is it? The label isn’t active anymore, but maybe they still have stock. I only have a 2003 live 7” by By Coastal Café – released on British label Kitchen with some shitty recordings from the Emmaboda festival.
But on Yvette you get 24 tracks from 1996-2000. Some of them were unreleased when it came out in 2013. Some are from their EPs. Some are from their only ‘album’ Old Cartoons from 2004, which also included tracks from their early EPs. This video appeared at the time of release.
Marilyn Petridean and Martin Lilja who were By Coastal Café came from Växjö. Sometimes I wonder if later groups like Times New Viking or Honey Radar ever heard this band.
