RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #332
We featured UK punk/mod group The Times as one of the first entries in our series, and the band’s frontman Edward Ball also played in another London group. That was Television Personalities, which he formed in 1977 together with main songwriter Dan Treacy and Joe Foster (who later co-founded Creation Records). At that time they were still in school.
After a couple of singles in 1978 they got airplay on BBC Radio thanks to John Peel and were later invited to do a session for him in 1980. These tracks are now available on Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out: The Television Personalities Radio Sessions – 1980-1993, released by Fire Records in January. On the 18-track double-vinyl you’ll also find their second BBC session, from 1986.
The other disc holds tracks recorded at WMBR (the college radio station at MIT) in 1992. There’s an also a digital bonus included, with tracks from a 1993 session at another college radio station. All in all, this is a neat representation of the early and mid eras of the group.
