80s HITS: The Great Unwashed

RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #223

We’re already featured New Zealand greats The Clean in this series – following the untimely passing of Hamish Kilgour. We’ve also featured Peter Gutteridge, but not yet The Great Unwashed, in which he once again joined the Kilgour brothers Hamish and David. This project started with just the two of them following the breakup of The Clean and in 1983 they released their first album Clean Out of Our Minds on Flying Nun.

Now this record has perhaps mostly been known as one half of 1992’s Collection, which gathered all of their discography. But there was a remastered reissue on Flying Nun years ago, I just can’t tell when exactly. Nevermind, since it’s long since sold out. Instead new Portland label Noise Prints has stepped in, and put out a new reissue in collaboration with MEDS.

The new pressing includes the 14 tracks from the original release, including ”Obscurity Blues” for which there was a video made as well. Peter later went on to Snapper and David formed Stephen and released his first solo album in 1991.
