Cleaners From Venus is an 80s band only the most nerdy devotees of DIY cassette music tend to be familiar with. Essentially consisting of Martin Newell, the group created a string of home-recorded (and often homemade) cassette albums.
But two years ago the documentary The Jangling Man was released as a collaboration between the film and media companies and US record label Captured Tracks.
The label also reissued a lot of the group’s back catalogue around ten years ago – across 11 LPs, also available as three limited box sets. And tomorrow sees the release of a new tribute compilation via Dandy Boy. There are 11 renditions on the LP from the likes of Chime School, Nic Hessler, The Smashing Times, Flowertown, Yea-Ming, Mister Baby (image via Kati) and The Dates. There’s also an extra 4-song 45 in limited quantities.
