80s HITS: Advanced Art

RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #213

Advanced Art was a Finnish EBM group who formed in Tampere in 1985. The managed to build a strong reputation in Finland, with influences from groups like Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Front 242 and Clan of Xymox. Their brand of synth ”pop” was fairly dark and they also released a couple of split-singles with the goth group Two Witches.

Apart from a few gigs in Sweden they apparently never toured, but still managed to appear on MTV Europe and release three albums. The first of those was a self-released cassette that came out in 1988. Some of these tracks are included on the compilation Darkhive: The Tape & Vinyl Years. It’s an 11-track retrospective Artoffact that focuses on the period from 1985 to 1991. It even includes a couple of tracks from the early phase of the band, when they were called Abstract.

It came out in 2015 and the same year a more expansive double-cd called Archive came out on EK Product. This one includes tracks from all of their releases, as well as live recordings.
