80s HITS: Skeet

RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #212

Skeet was a post-punk group from Coventry, originally formed by the brothers Gary and Nigel Meffen in 1981. Eventually they were joined by Kay Booth on vocals, after she’d heard a live cassette at the record store Inferno Records where she was working. With the addition of her vocals the group sounded a bit like Young Marble Giants or Liquid Liquid.

They had recorded a demo tape in 1981 but broke up before a proper release could materialise. Chris Long, who had helped them record the 6 tracks eventually put them out last year on his own label Almost Unknown. The Park Road 12” was, as I understand it remastered from that cassette. Apparently the original recordings were eventually found and found their way to Mikey Young, who is a big fan of the group. The remastered tracks plus some live recordings now make up Simple Reality – an 8-track LP coming out on Efficient Space next month.

For some reason the track ”Meat House” was omitted, but you can hear it on streaming services. Even so, this might be the most essential reissue of 2024.
