Nordland was a Swiss minimal wave and new wave band started by Mario Scherrer and Priska Weber. The group also included Anna Kellenberger and later Hermann Eugster – existing for about 10 years.
The Amsterdam label Dee Dee’s Picks, which has previously worked with Scherrer’s music (reissuing a 1986 album of his) and two years ago they put out this live recording of Nordland from 1987. Apparently the gig had been preserved for posterity by the national radio for the German and Romansh territories of Switzerland.
Live at Fri-Son ’87 not only includes 10 remastered tracks that sound so great I can’t believe it’s a live recording – but also the 4 tracks from their debut EP. This untitled 12” was put in in 1986 by the band themselves. Comparisons are perhaps superfluous but the music really made me think of Coldreams.
The duo’s 1989 album Mystery has a slightly different sound but is also enjoyable. This one has yet to be reissued.
