Venus Rising From the Sea is the title of a new compilation from London publisher and label Doyenne – run by Flora Yin Wong. The 12-track LP that came out a couple of weeks ago is exclusively available through Boomkat and features Doyenne alumni Christina Vantzou, Susu Laroche (pictured) and Spivak. They cover old favourites together with Teresa Winter (doing Pentangle), Dania Shihab (doing The Cranberries) and Yin Wong herself (doing Mariah Carey).
Susu Laroche’s version of Nina Simone’s version of ”Black is the Colour of My True Love’s Hair” is hair-raising. Laroche is a French/Egyptian visual artist who started making music a few years ago. Aya (whom I just saw turning Intonal on its head) contributes a bold cover of The Cure’s ”Lovesong”. We just featured Claire Rousay, who takes on Dntel (one half of Postal Service).
