Ash Wednesday once played in post-punk group Models, who released a split with The Boys Next Door (Nick Cave’s first band). He left after just one year and his lone solo single “Love By Numbers” came out in 1980 as a private pressing. The vocalist, billed as Karen Marx, later worked with Wednesday on her single “Cold Café”. Karen Marks has since become a name almost any fan of coldwave and minimal wave known, but Ash Wednesday not so much.
Despite getting a retrospective compilation called Love and Other Numbers 1980-1984 in 2012, it’s only recently that more people have started paying attention. The original cd on Omni eventually got a vinyl pressing in 2023 thanks to Sorcerer Records. The new version contains 12 of the tracks, including a fascinating demo of “Cold Café”.
