RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #167
Code Assault was an 80s group from Detroit, who existed around the same time Detroit techno was taking shape. They were however, mixing up their electronic sound with EBM and industrial influences from Europe. As such they were among only a handful of black artists within that style, using it to address political problems of “racism, the media, and the hypocrisy of patriotism”.
So says Dark Entries founder Josh Cheon, who has just reissued the group’s 1991 EP Structure. This came out after they’d changed their name to Code Industry in 1989, and had released an album on Antler-Subway the following year. Their only release as Code Assault turned out to be a self-released 12″ called Action!! in 1989. It was a one-off release on their own Technika label.
