A.C. Marias

RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #158

The first A.C. Marias single from 1981 almost became their only release. Formed by Angela Conway together with Bruce Gilbert from Wire, the duo had a very minimal approach to post-punk. The sound of “Drop”, released on Wire’s label Dome and distributed by Rough Trade, is still timeless. It was like Young Marble Giant but prefiguring the sound of 4AD acts like This Mortal Coil.

They decided to reform in 1986 and recorded what became an album, called One of Our Girls Has Gone Missing. It came out on Mute in 1989 and still hasn’t got a vinyl reissue. While it does sound more dated than their debut, it’s still a fascinating dark pop record.
