RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #156
Who were BGM? The legendary Back Ground Music LP from 1980 was the creation of Japanese artist Takayuki Shiraishi, who was influenced by the legendary experimental label Vanity Records when he was in high school. It didn’t take him long to release his own first project on the label, and on the only BGM release he mixed kraut with new wave and post-punk, creating what is now one of the most sought-after releases from the Japanese underground.
The album was finally remastered and reissued by Tokyo label Studio Mule in 2019. Curiously the fifth album by Yellow Magic Orchestra that came out the following year was also called BGM.
