King Woman from Oakland is just one of many projects involving Kris Esfandiar (also in Miserable, NGHTCRWLR, Sugar High). King Woman as a band are influenced by doom metal, but playing in a style that is equally informed by gothic pop (they don’t mind covering Stone Roses). Celestial Blues is their second album (the last one from 2017) and is all about atmosphere and effect – there’s not a single riff here that doesn’t need to be there. The album is coming out on Relapse Records in a few weeks, having been preceded by two singles and videos.
