It’s been a couple of years since Australian psych-pop group Babe Rainbow released the excellent Today LP. Now they’re finally back with a new album on Flightless, called Changing Colours. Several singles have been appearing since 2020, with “Your Imagination” following in March this year, followed by “Ready For Tomorrow”. The former features American hiphop artist Jaden (Will Smith’s son) and there’s even a song dedicated to California on the record. The whole album has a nice laidback groove to it, and it’s no coincidence that there’s a track called “Smile” here. The meeting of surf and psychedelic baroque pop that Brian Wilson gave birth to is an obvious inspiration.
