Listening to Lael Neale’s Acquainted With the Night is a bit of a revelation. It’s not that often I would feel touched by a release Sub Pop these days. But signing the LA-based folkrock musician is worth applauding. Since her 2015 album I’ll Be Your Man, Neale has been working on a follow-up and the result is a minimal masterpiece. The songs are mostly performed using an omnichord and lofi programmed drums (which might even be the built-in drum patterns). Also featuring some guitar and organ, the songs are full of tape hiss from the 4-track. The analogue feel is perfectly matched by the videos Neale has shot on VHS in her childhood Virginia home.
