Midori Takada

RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #54

Midori Takada is turning 70 this year but released new music just last year (a free jazz album together with Kang Tae Hwan). Takada was born in Tokyo and was a trained percussionist, founding the group Mkwaju Ensemble in the early 80s. However, her lasting legacy on avantgarde music has become her first solo album Through the Looking Glass from 1983, on which she performs all instruments. An early ambient classic, is has now become one of the most important works of the Japanese underground of the 80s, along with e.g. Mariah. The album’s four tracks blend minimalism with rhythms from other cultures, such as gamelan music. It was reissued in 2017 by WRWTFWW Records and Palto Flats.
