What would Yo La Tengo have sounded like if they were from Hamilton, NZ instead of Hoboken, NJ? That’s the sort of nerdy pop culture reference that you’d imagine Melbourne group Annual Leaf might be down with. It’s also an interesting discussion in relation to their upcoming mini-album Another Wave Home, due out in a few weeks. If you listen to the first single “Fairground In Winter” it’s evident that they’ve listened to American groups that used to the best kept secrets of your cool friend, maybe Yo La Tengo or Sebadoh. But they also have obvious influences from Flying Nun groups like The Chills and The Verlaines. The new 7-track record is a sizeable step forward for the quartet that shares a member with Girlatones.
