Group A is a Tokyo duo that has released two great albums this year. Another (a multimedia project developed at Agora de la danse, Montréal in 2018) came out on Mannequin in May and last month B.F.E. released their first full-length album on vinyl for the first time. It was originally released on a CDR back in 2013, shortly after Tommi Tokyo (synths, drum machines, vocals) and Sayaka Botanic (violin, sampler, tapes) formed the group. A very intriguing listen, Initiation bears witness to their practice of breaking down the boundary between musical performance and performance art. As such, many tracks have a visceral feel and vocals that are incanted rather than sung.
