Cut Wire is a Melbourne group that I got a chance to see live several times earlier this year. Now they’ve finally released their first proper single, called “Waste My Life”. It’s an eerie track that’s hard to pin down, clearly influenced by Portishead and UK triphop sounds, laying out a sprawling soundscape on top of a frantic drum machine. The effect is almost hypnotic. The band shares members with the equally great Uva Ursi that we’ve featured before, as well as Forever Renter and a bunch of other groups. But Cut Wire sound like no one else, which is a bold move for Melbourne bands who often try to emulate each other. Check out the video that premiered a few days ago.
