The Bookends is a garage/powerpop duo started by two cousins called Karen Lynn and Sharon Lee, who live in Pennsylvania and Arizona respectively. Their debut LP from two years should have been well received by fans of Baby Shakes and only last week the follow-up Calliope came out on New Jersey label Jem. It’s a 14-track album that bows to the altar of British Invasion groups – down to the Rickenbacker and Vox instrumentation. The production is perhaps a bit too clean and straight for 60s aficionados, but tracks like “Keep Keeping On” and “It’s Your Turn to Cry” sound like April March on a mean streak.
