Thanks to underground tastemaker Not Unloved I got introduced to the new Warp subsidiary Disciples’ back catalogue. One of their most notable releases this year has been a new album from Japanese musician and sound artist Phew, who has been making music since the 80s. After playing in the punk band Aunt Sally in the late 70s, Hiromi Moritani has been recording as Phew on and off, eventually getting back into releasing new music ten years ago. Vertigo KO is a collection of outtakes from her last two albums, including a few new tracks, like a cover of The Raincoats’ “The Void”. It’s a fantastic piece of experimental vocal/electronic sounds.
