After a few records as Oh Sees, John Dwyer changed their name for last year’s album of synthesizer music – signalling a change in direction perhaps. New member Tomas Dolas (Mr. Elevator) recorded The 12″ Synth with Dwyer and plays keyboards on new album Protean Threat. Like the improvisational album Bent Arcana that Dwyer, Dolas and a bunch of other musicians released last month on Castle Face, this LP is a joy to listen to. Full of new ideas and one of their most memorable song in years, called “Mizmuth”. It was recorded during the pandemic in April, while forthcoming album Metamorphosed consists of outtakes from the Face Stabber sessions. So while the LP represents an earlier version of the band, its release on Rock Is Hell was delayed until October.
