I’m not the only one who was impressed with Canadian group Freak Heat Waves’ third album Beyond XXXL that Telephone Explosion released a couple of years ago. Now they’re finally back with a new album for the same label and Zap the Planet takes them further from the guitar-based sound that they shared with e.g. Teenanger. The album is full of tasty beats and amazing percussion, daring you to dance to its twisted sounds. I much prefer the instrumental cuts however, because the vocals have now developed into a sort of slur or drawl that sounds like a bad imitation of Dope Lemon. Closing track “Nothing Lasts Forever” is a beautiful piece of broken r’n’b.
