RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #22
I just got my copy of the Meanbean reissue of Z-Cars’ lone single. This Is Z-Cars originally came out on Au Go Go in 1980 and is a classic of Australian punk. There was a another group in the US who had also taken their name from the British tv show Z-Cars but this one was a four-piece from Melbourne, led by one Russel Street. Apparently the name was the idea of their friend Rob in Little Murders (whom we wrote about a while back). Both sides of the single have been included on punk compilations, but the reviews back in 1980 were generally unfavourable. Juke magazine even said “possibly the worst guitar sound ever put on record”.
