What a surprise, Austin group Holy Wave turn a corner and come out sounding better than ever on their new LP Interlooper. The album, that came out a week ago on Reverberation Appreciation Society, sees the band mostly leaving the psychedelic sound of their first era behind and instead sounding very much like Stereolab. The record is full of warm, buzzing sounds, bouncy bass lines and “Escapism”. Almost all the songs appear like fully formed anthems to MPB, analog synthesisers and the sophisticated pop of the 90s. “I’m Not Living In the Past Anymore” almost becomes a truism that goes for the whole record. It’s a multi-layered soundscape and a refreshing listen throughout.
