Mildlife from Melbourne have announced their second album Automatic, coming out on Heavenly in September. They were a great pairing with Stereolab on the UK group’s Melbourne date this spring and I really enjoyed seeing them live. While their previous albums have sounded more like studio workouts, the new single “Rare Air”definitely has the groove of their live sound. Like last year’s single “How Long Does It Take” they make a small shift away from their fusion beginnings to a more danceable sounds grounded in funk and disco. Just like Mauskovic Dance Band, their music is obviously the result of as many of hours of crate-digging as playing jazz scales.
