Sweet Spirit from Austin is an iconoclastic group that seems to have no trouble mixing glam with disco or indie. Lead singer and songwriter Sabrina Ellis is probably better known from A Giant Dog, but has now released three albums as Sweet Spirit that started as a solo project. Now signed to Merge, the full band released their latest album Trinidad a couple of weeks ago. It’s an ambitious record, not afraid to sound big and still having the spirit of Patti Smith and Big Star over it. It’s their most cohesive effort and not even the half-sung-in-Spanish disco number “Llorando” feels out of place.
