Naming your solo project after a Beach Boys song definitely sets some expectations. Instead of a throwback, Canberra artist California Girls seems more informed by the Magnetics Fields’ proclamation “I hate California girls”. Angus McGrath released an album under this pseudonym back in 2016, which was a dark post-punk tale. He’s got a new album coming out on Dero Arcade in March called Beat Boy however, and the first two singles sport a more postmodern underground wave sound. We love it.
