Melbourne four-piece House Deposit have released their first album on cassette via Spoilsport Records. Despite sounding nothing like Display Homes, this is a great record that addresses all the downsides to middleclass living. In their own words: Anxiety. Severe depression. Self-medication. Unemployment. Reward For Effort is an album that is so 2019 it’s hard to imagine a more accurate take on current affairs. “Ikea Dreaming” is a much-needed update of Pavement’s “Date With Ikea”. Sounding a lot like Beat Happening Here, the rest will remind of the first faltering steps of The Twerps and Bitch Prefect. “I’m so scared of the future” in the eponymous closing track feels like the most honest lyrics of the year.
