Somehow, it feels incredible that Amyl & the Sniffers from Melbourne haven’t released an album until now. Equally strange is that I haven’t managed to see them play yet. Luckily, that will change this week. The group also finally managed to release an LP on Flightless (Rough Trade in Europe) this year. The selftitled LP sports a beefier sound, but Amyl’s deadpan vocal style remains the same. Which is good, because I liked the sound on Big Attraction much better. The band are at their best when they dare to still be tongue-in-cheek, like on the unexpected love song “I Got You”. Opening track “Starfire 500” is the only track that feels superfluous here, with its overt AC/DC riffing.
