It’s another month still, until the new Mikal Cronin 45 drops – but it’ll be out on Famous Class, so you’d better get your pre-orders in early. Another reason to do so, is the fact that a-side “Undertow” is some of the best work I’ve heard from Cronin since his second album. This is an unusually long track for a single, sprawling across 5 minutes full of hooks and dynamic changes – something Cronin has specialised in. As usual, impossible to pin down genre-wise, “Undertow” defies classification and melds the alt country of The Jayhawks with 80s powerpop and 00s garage as epitomised by his buddy Ty Segall.
