So Cut Worms released a brilliant EP last year, that was included in the end-of-years lists on here. But now that he’s back with the debut album Hollow Ground on Jagjaguwar, I’m really beginning to think he’s a melodic mastermind. This record is indeed the best folkpop album since U.N.P.O.C. rocked the world via Fife-based Fence Records.
The record includes some of the tracks from the EP, newly recorded and a bit more polished. But it actually fits the narrative curve of the album, letting the uptempo numbers like “Cash For Gold” pack the real punches. And “Don’t Want to Say Good-Bye” might be the most singalong-friendly track of the year so far.
