The Sound of Young Scotland is a project created by Grant McPhee and Digital Onset Films, documenting the history of Scottish indie music. The first film, called Big Gold Dream, premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival earlier this year – winning the audience award. Soon, the second part Teenage Superstars will appear in the cinemas. I have designed the posters for the films, as well as a Sound of Young Scotland logotype (set in Berlingske Serif Stencil, by Playtype). The first poster shows the members of the band Scars out of Edinburgh, while the new one depicts Glasgow darlings The Pastels. The inspiration for Big Gold Dream were Fast Records album sleeves, and for Teenage Superstars it was the posters for legendary club Splash One! (run by Bobby Gillespie, amongst others). The film also includes Scottish artist Jim Lambie’s footage from the club in 1986, with cameos from many now well-known musicians.
