This is an event that hasn’t happened yet, luckily for you, and you can still sign up for it here. MEDEA Collaborative Media Initiative at Malmö University is organising a talk with Paul Kelly, the day after Bob Stanley appears at Popskolan. Paul Kelly, who has been known to play live with Saint Etienne, was the guitarist in one of my favourite bands East Village in the late 80s and early 90s, and has more recently recorded as Birdie together with his partner Deborah.
The topic of the talk will be his output as a filmmaker, rather than his formidable musical history. His film What Have You Done Today, Mervyn Day? will be screened but the shocker is that, as a bonus, you will also get to see Take Three Girls: The Dolly Mixture Story. What do you get if you take three girls, except a dolly mixture? Well, you’d get another of my favourite groups. Dolly Mixture was started by Deborah Wykes (of the very same Birdie) and two other women in 1978, and the film is a 40-minute documentary about them. I’ve wanted to see this film for several years now, so this is a chance you mustn’t pass up.
